How Fish Is Made into Fertilizers

Fish fertilizers come in two types. The two differ a bit in the way they are processed. And because of this the two also differ in efficiency.

Hydrolyzed fish fertilizer is basically made by putting fresh fish under low temperatures. To liquefy the raw material, it is stored in digestion tanks until it is ready for use. The material is usually ground and screened to produce hydrolyzed fish fertilizers with the consistency similar to chocolate.

On the other hand, fish emulsion is processed by cooking the fishes. The oils and the protein are then removed from it. The meat is usually dried and made into feeds for livestock. And lastly, the wastewater is then condensed until it becomes a brown and thick liquid. This is now what is known as the fish emulsion.

This means that fish emulsion is essentially a by-product of many other fish products. There are some disadvantages of using fish emulsion though. For one, most processing uses chlorine which can be bad for the plants. And then heat also usually destroys natural nutrients so it may not be that effective anymore. Fish emulsion also smells awfully bad compared to hydrolyzed fish fertilizers.

Fish fertilizers are pretty common now among organic fertilizers. If you are buying at the store, make sure you know what you are buying. Some brands do not indicate whether it is hydrolyzed fish fertilizers or fish emulsions. One way to know this is by checking the nitrogen levels. Natural nitrogen level usually is only about 2.3%. So, if you see it reaching to 4% or above, it is a fish emulsion.
